Sep. 28th, 2003 12:03 amThere is something peaceful about an empty nightclub before the doors officially open to the public--relaxed, yet full of potential. As a child, my friends and I used play at being a DJ with a hand-me-down turn-table and 80's pop records; we used to write and record songs (singing over the percussive bangs of pots and pans stolen from the cupboard); we used to make mixed drinks, creatively combining all the liquids in the kitchen. As I sat at the quiet bar, I remembered all those childish games and suddenly felt like I was still playing. The DJ was a friend. So was the bartender, who demands I should at least do a shot of orange juice and poured me a double. And my band's song played quietly through the PA system above an empty stage that I'll be standing on in about two months. As long as this never feels like work, I want to keep on playing this game.
