Jan. 15th, 2004 11:33 amIs it too much to ask for a job that I can go to in the morning and have a reasonable expectation that progress will be made? I'm going on my 3rd or 4th week here of fighting a losing battle with the new PC the office sent me. Sometimes, I really hate computers. I know there are many people who enjoy just playing with computers--playing with hardware and software installation and configuration. Bless their hearts, somebody's got to do that. But for me, computers hold very little interest beyond being a tool to do something useful or build something. However, their complexity makes them prone to being very crappy tools. If a carpenter had to use a tool as fickle as a computer, we'd still be living in caves. Lately, my PC experience has been the equivalent of a carpenter trying to pound some nails with a hammer whose head falls off after every other strike. Today, my experience has been the carpenter's equivalent of someone dipping his hammer into nitro glycerin prior to his first swing at a nail. What will tomorrow hold? Probably the carpenter's equivalent of being abducted by aliens and probed with his hammer.
