realexplodingcat: (flying nun)

I won't let my wife watch "The Flying Nun" when I'm in the room. I can't bear to look at that hat, wimple, habit, thing that Gidget wears. See, when I was a young lad and receiving a large amount of my social skills via the television, I was in puppy love with Gidget--

(who? Sally Field? isn't that the commando mom in that film "Not Without My Daughter"? never heard of her)

Gidget. So, to see Gidget in that nun's uniform reminds me of the centuries of burden my Catholic upbringing has placed upon my back. Gidget's nun hat is a symbol of the Christian de-sexing and subjugation of women everywhere. The show is propaganda of the worst kind. "Come, girls, come to the nunnery, where you too will fly with the birds if you only give up your sexual identity and wear this stupid hat." To give up your identity, your individuality, your woman-ness...is to be free as the birds. But, alas, I don't wish to bore you any further with quotes from my doctoral dissertation about Gidget.

So, I take a look at my live journal today, and discover that SOMEONE has edited my default user pic. My poor ExplodingCat has given up its sexual identity, preferring to fly with the birds. My wife is getting too skilled with Photoshop. Clearly, she believes that as a good Catholic I should feel guilty for the harm Christianity has done to the world's cultures and that I must repent. So...I, the exploding cat, will don the nun's hat to share the suffering of nuns everywhere. Well, I'll have her know it's all part of my evil plan. No bird would suspect a flying nun cat. The exploding cat shall fly with the birds, and eat them. Pluck them from the air like berries from a burning bush.

That is so damned great I can't believe it. I'm making two of those hats for our two cats (one of which, incidentally, is actually named 'bird').
I was raised Unitarian, so I have little idea about catholic mythology (I was often confused by religious references when I was a kid- I know more about Buddhism and Islam then I do about Christianity), but that bit about 'plucking them from the air like berries from a burning bush' is right on!

But wouldn't their feathers catch on fire?

The Fire of God does not burn, it Heals! Now...the Fire of Hell...that's a different story.

Can I get an Amen?

These days I like to believe I'm more Buddhist than Catholic.

So, are you making nun hats for your cats after being inspired by my post...or was this already a project in progress? If the latter...that's rather creepy. I like it.

I think you are one of the few people who can get good use out of the mood icon for "quixotic". :-)

I laughed at this so hard I think I just went from level 6 to level 7 on that Dante test. No wonder I turned out so evil. :)

Jos really did do a great job with that -- it looks like it came right from the original scan. Scary. This could be the start of a trend. Exploding cat wearing a fez, a chef's hat, a beanie, a beret ... Micky Mouse ears even?

Er ... maybe not.

Evil is in the eye of the beholder. I did that Dante test and I'm in Level 1, with all the virtuous pagans. I'm chilling with Socrates and Virgil. I suspected I'd end up there.

Yeah, I'm still amazed at how good a job Jos did with the hat. Maybe if I ever get a paid account, I'll have her do a bunch of different pictures with different hats for user icons.
