I know my attendance has been slacking. Illness and long work weeks have been sapping my energy for the weekend. But I have sure been in a funk since I learned The Dawning, our local gothic/industrial club, is losing it's long held location in the basement of a sushi bar.

The Dawning is one of the reasons I moved here. I moved here for the people, the friends. One of the things that make you people so special is you've created an entity that is truly greater than the sum of each individual (and that's saying something, considering how great you individuals are). People from all around the country, both fans and bands, feel it. The Dawning is a place full of potential energy. Truly a venue which can give what you put into it. For those so inclined, it's a place where self discoveries can be made in a supportive environment. Everyone has probably discovered something about themselves. They can dance. They can sing. They can play a guitar. Write a song. DJ a set. Look prettier than they ever thought possible. Mix a drink. Drink a drink. Be a photographer or a videographer. Or just sit on the couch and drool on themselves in utter relief that it is the weekend and here is this place in which one can escape from the rest of the world for a little while. The Dawning has been a place for us to explore ourselves and each other (sometimes quite literally...come on, I know you were thinking it...). There have been many ups and downs, as any exploration will have, but each individual's reason for coming to The Dawning creates that magical, intangible thing that is "A Scene"--the entity that is greater than the sum of its parts.

From all the comments I've read and the support I've heard about, it sounds like the scene and The Dawning is still very much alive, even if it may be temporarily without a venue. Of course there are still three weeks, and I can't forget that I'm playing with Silent Muse. We might be one of the last gothic/industrial bands to play the basement of that sushi bar, so at the very least I hope to contribute with a good show. But, [livejournal.com profile] xiane, let me know if there's anything else I can do to contribute to keeping The Dawning alive. Despite this sad turn of events, I'm hoping this could turn out to be the best thing that ever happened to The Dawning. Sometimes stuff like this happens to force inevitable positive growth.

Le Dawning est mort, vive le Dawning!

That explains it better that I could in brief.

And [livejournal.com profile] xiane has posted a brief update in her journal.

What a total effing bummer. Yeah, sure it was small; sure it got hotter 'n hell down there; sure they were always out of whatever my first choice of drink was; sure parking could be a bitch at times, but hey, The Dawning was a great little place damnit. ;) Alas, dear Dawning, I barely knew you...

I think you're right, though. It sounds like [livejournal.com profile] xiane isn't taking this laying down, so this may in fact have been the kick in the A the scene needed. When I was down there I kinda wondered if it might be possible to open up a dedicated club. There'd be a lot more possibility, plus the powers that be could actually earn some money for all their trouble. Here's hoping...

In other news, why is your exploding cat now Italian? Did I blink and miss the explanation?

Yeah, we're hoping Xiane and friends can pull off a shiny new Dawning. People are coming out of the woodwork to support her.

No, no explanation about why my exploding cat is Italian. We were recreating the icon without the hat...Jocelyn started to think it looked like a flag with. So we made it look even more like a flag, I think there should be an Exploding Cat nation with a flag, Mostly arbitrary color choice... Yeah, it's Italian. I may change it someday because it really makes very little sense (but that's why we did it in the first place). Hey...I've got fairly recently immigrated Italian blood in me...I suppose I have right to those colors ;)
