Dead Can Dance

The Strathmore Music Center is a lovely venue.

Now that I've seen Brendan Perry live, I have a new appreciation for him. I've always thought he was cool, but hearing his voice live was a great experience. And he can play every instrument on stage...and there were a lot! (Including a hurdy gurdy, which did nothing to diminish my wife's unholy desire to possess one) I have a newfound and even greater (if that's possible) respect for him.

Lisa Gerrard is from another planet. Her voice is the sound of the music of the spheres. And she can sing the blues. "Hymn for the Fallen" is a great song (and unusual for Dead Can Dance). It's not on any of their albums, so I ordered the live recording just to hear that again.

No, unfortunately, they didn't record in New York. I had a mental hiccup when I saw October 10th was available "That's it, that's the show!" but no. I think I remember hearing that they were going to be performing in Los Angeles with the LA philharmonic, so maybe they will get the rights to that. I don't know if it's the venue that needs to give permission, or if in fact the use of an orchestra means that they won't be recording the show.

I have no idea what the case is with DCD, but some venues want distribution rights/royalties for live recordings, so some bands will not record shows in those locations. Heck, Neubauten boycotts (or would like to) ClearChannel because of it.
